How to turn a photo of your child into a picture book character

A personalized picture book works when the hero really looks like your child, on every page. Here is how to go from one photo to an illustrated character, and from that character to a whole book.

STEP 1

Start from one clear photo

One person, face visible, reasonable light. A school photo or a phone snapshot both work. Glasses, freckles and hair colour are all picked up.

The photo here is an AI-generated example, not a real child.

  • Your photo is never stored. It is used in memory for that one character and then discarded. Only the illustrated character and a plain description are kept.
  • Group photos are turned away. The app checks the photo first, at no cost, and asks for one person with a visible face.
  • It keeps their likeness. Face shape, skin tone, hair, eye colour, glasses and freckles carry over into the drawing.
STEP 2

The character sheet

From the photo you get two reference images, a full body and a face close-up, drawn in the style you picked for the book. Every page is drawn from these two images.

STEP 3

Write the story, one page at a time

Say what happens on each page in a sentence. The page is painted with your child, the rest of the cast and your places.

“Leo rides on Bronto's back as Bronto walks through the jungle beside the river”
What the picture shows. The text the reader sees is written separately, so the words on the page can be your own.

STEP 4

Read it tonight, or print it

Read the book on screen, or add a front and back cover and export print-ready PDFs for Amazon KDP to order a paperback.

Want the whole picture first? The same character on every page guide explains why the references matter, and the Amazon KDP guide covers printing.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Is my child's photo stored?

No. The photo is used in memory to create the illustrated character and is then discarded. Only the illustrated reference images and a short plain-language description are kept.

Will the character actually look like my child?

The character keeps the main features of the photo: face shape, skin tone, hair colour and style, eye colour, glasses and freckles, drawn in the illustration style you chose.

Can I add siblings, parents or pets?

Yes. Each person or pet becomes their own character, from a photo or from a written description, and they can appear together on a page.

How much does a personalized book cost?

A character costs 2 credits and each page 1 credit, so a 10-page book with two characters and a cover is about 15 credits. Single Spark is $14.99 for 50 credits, the Creator Pack $24.99 for 100 credits and the Publisher Pack $89.99 for 400 credits, about $0.22 to $0.30 per image. There is no subscription.
